What is Delta-8?
The Gist of it
Delta-8 THC will get you high but it is not marijuana. Users say they experience a smoother “high” with less anxiety (than its counterpart Delta 9-THC) and more of a “body buzz”. It’s an appetite stimulant and can reduce feelings of nausea. The edibles are slow to feel the full effects and then come in waves. The vape, and hemp flower powdered in Delta-8 have more immediate effects.
When experimenting with Delta 8 for the first time, we suggest starting low and slow in the amount you consume, regardless of your tolerance level. It can take awhile for the effects to be noticeable. Be patient.
The Deets
Delta-8 is a form of THC that’s derived from hemp and is considered federally legal. Delta-8 is said to be a “sister” to Delta-9 THC which is NOT federally legal.
Delta-8 is not found in high amounts within the cannabis plant. In fact, it is less than 1% of the plant, but with the help of science, Delta-8 can be extracted and made into concentrate from CBD.
Delta-8 is legal in states that define hemp under the same wording as the 2018 Farm Bill, however some states operate on what’s called a Total THC law. Which means the total THC content of the product must be below 0.3%. Since Delta-8, Delta-9, and THCa, are natural forms of THC, they are all calculated together into total THC. In states that have a Total THC law, Delta-8 would be illegal. Those states include: Alaska, Arkansas, Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Mississippi and Montana.
The Bottom Line
Some people report greater therapeutic benefits such as better pain relief while using Delta-8, but clinical trials need to be conducted to see if it has better medicinal properties.
Delta-8 may affect blood pressure, heart rate, and/or intraocular pressure in some people. If you have any known heart, blood pressure, eye pressure or similar/related issues, do not use unless recommended by a doctor.
